Tattoo News Review
Photo of Rescue Ink by Daniel Goodrich for Newsday.
Today's tattoo news review is dedicated to those who spent yesterday eating a whole lamb, head and all, on a spit in their backyards, drinking ouzo, and listening to their parents bemoan their tattoos. Yes, I'm talking about Greek Easter, which my homegirl Rita Wilson describes on Arianna (another homie)'s Huffington Post as a 'joy.' Says you, Rita! Greek Easter is about getting your hair burned at midnight mass by an old lady who falls asleep holding a candle. It's about meat, meat, meat -- hence the trauma suffered by Greek vegetarians. And it's about finding a turtleneck to cover your husband's tattoos that crawl up the side of his face so that the family doesn't throw him on the spit with the lamb. The good part about it: chocolate bunnies are all half-price since we're late (as usual) on the celebrating.
So, for all my tattooed, pierced, vegan, gay and atheist Greeks: You made it another year. Rock on. Now for the news.
The most hardcore of it all: The blue eye tattoo continues. [Modblog also posted more tattoo work from my turtleneck-wearing man.]
Newsday featured the tattooed crew from Rescue Ink with this photo above by Daniel Goodrich. We wrote about these pet saving sweethearts a few weeks ago, and how they can be very convincing with owners who abuse and neglect their animals. The Newsday article offers more on their volunteer efforts.
Did a tear-drop tattoo, which can signify you killed another, prejudice a jury in a murder trial? The defendant argues that he should have been allowed to cover up the black ink beneath his eye with make-up. I think if you wanna play gangsta with the killer tattoos, don't cry about it later when they're used against you.
Way too many articles surfaced about whether American Idol's Carly Smithson has a tattoo of Amy Winehouse. It's quite obviously a geisha, but celeb media has never been very bright.
In Fresno, tattoo removal for gangs and welfare recipients, with the goal of helping find employment, hit a red-tape snag leaving many with half-done laser work and thus, a bigger bod mod mess than before.
Meanwhile, ink was being added in Fresno at their tattoo convention this past weekend (article and video). The Fresno Bee has a some photos from the show.
Edmonton, Canada has its first convention this past weekend as well. The Edmonton Sun profiles Lucky Diamond Rich -- the world's Most Tattooed Person -- who performed at the show.
More zoning problems for tattooists wanting to open up studios, this time in Newark, NJ and in Peachtree, Georgia. These stories are becoming a weekly feature. The lesson here is that tattooists need to check their local zoning laws before opening up, and even more important, we all need to vote in local elections so close-minded politicians don't win and thus bar us from body art.
In Germany, some members of parliament are seeking a ban on cosmetic surgery for children and teens, and a number want to extend the ban to piercings and tattoos for small children -- like those under ten. Who the hell is tattooing someone under ten? That's one tattoo ban I understand.
A quandary over a butt tattoo makes Winnipeg's MissLonelyHearts column.
Tattoos gain popularity in India and Pakistan.
And finally, Avril Lavigne gets a star tattoo ... just to toy with me.
