Breast Cancer Tattoo
Tomorrow, my most fabulous mom goes in for breast cancer surgery, so I thought I'd revisit an old post from July 2005 on how tattooists are helping cancer survivors in honor of her.
For one, there's the Healing Art Foundation: a charity founded by France and Al Garcia of Tatdude, which brings artists and cancer survivors together, whether it be areola re-pigmentation, tattoos over surgery scars, or any artwork to make them feel beautiful. They also raise money for breast cancer charities, specifically Art for a Cure. Read more about their work here.
Also helping breast cancer survivors for many years is tattooist and author Madame Chinchilla of Triangle Tattoo, one of the first artists who tattooed over mastectomy scars. In her In Celebration of a Scar page, see wonderful imagery and read stories of kick-ass women who have turned ugly adversity into something quite beautiful.
Other online sites to check are the Cancer Memorial Tattoo MySpace page and BME.com's gallery of breast cancer tattoo tributes.
To help in cancer research, consider a two-day or three day Walk for a Cure in the US; or a run in Canada; or a marathon in Bristol, UK.
I have just a handful of Needled tees left, but if you are taking part in a cancer charity walk/run/roll, I'll send you one for free to wear that day. Just send me a note and proof of your registration (first come, first serve).
